1987 distributor

A guy at work here has a 1987 slant 6 1/2 ton, hard to start and no power. The distributor has no vacum chamber on it. Is this year supposed to be electric advance.

great engine but hard to work on with anything ignition related. they stashed everything to that engine on the passenger side. took me a 18" extension just to get to the bolt on the holddown for the dizzy.
do you have an idea as to what the problem might be??

We are thinking timing. It seems lazy and hard to start. Not sure of history of engine work if any.

Did that year still have mechanical lifters, if so a valve adjustment might also be in order.
