98 dodge transfer case problems ?

Might be going to look at a 98 dodge ram 1500 not sure the size of the motor but think she said a V8 its auto reg. cab shortbox the problem is that she said there is a noise coming from the transfer case a banging and something like a bumping sound said it happens when she is on a ruff road or hits a bump with it. on the highway it's quit this is really all i know , do they have trouble with those transfer cases ? i think it might be something else but she said she was told that it was a bad chain ? she just got the truck 2weeks ago and wasn't told be the guy she bought it from there was something wrong so now she is selling it since she doesn't have any money to fix it. what do you guys think it could be ? also she said it does not pop out of 4X4. any info would be great !

Thats one of the things i was thinking or even a bad u-joint or cv. i woulded think a chain inside the case would make enough noise that you could hear like she said she can.

gm bang if the front shaft doesn't slide in and out, especially when you crank the wheel

I had a 97 dodge ram for several years and ended up putting 2 different transfer cases in it. I also work at an independent automotive service repair shop and I would like to tell you that they are not extremely uncommon. As long as it's not a Jeep Quadra-drive, a used transfer case is not that expensive.
