08 6.7 liter vs 07 5.9 need your thoughts. Im looking to trade my 07 5.9 for an 08 6.7 but gave heard ther are issues with the 6.7. Im looking for a 4 WD truck and with the current prices and incentives it might be worth it. Another concern is the emmisions on the 08, I don't know much about it but understand it can be costly. Any thoughts would be great and thanks for your time. Doug

if your wanting to upgrade for power, then stick with the 5.9... you can only do so much to the 6.7 before you start having to mess with the engine controls. the 5.9 is much easier to bypass all the emmision stuff on. I can't remember what diesel magazine I got that they added everything they could to a 6.7 and it didn't touch their 5.9 that had a high dollar chip, exhaust, and intake..... Personal preforance, I would stick with the 5.9.... Thats my opinon though

Thanks batty, not sure if its a power thing for me but I agree, Im real happy with my power in the 5.9. Really just wanted to get a 4 wd, we camp in remote areas with a 37 ft bumper pull camper, one occasion I couldn't back up a slight incline that was damp, put a 4wd on the camper and he eased throught the wet spot easily. But thank you very much for your reply, are you aware if any emmision issues with the 08?

they have a LOT more of an emmision system than the 5.9's did. I'm not sure all of what they added, but I do know that its kinda a pain to deal with, if you want to upgrade. if your going to do the stock thing, then they should be fine. You can find used 4x4 5.9 cummins for really good deals, since with the market at its current state, nobody is buying trucks.

alright dugger, I work for a dodge dealer and i am obsessed with the cummins. there is not better engine out there in my opinion... but like the others have said, the new cummins does have ALOT of emissions equipment, egr cooler and recirculation, as well as the mandatory diesel particulate filter in the exhaust. how many issues you have with the new truck is going to depend on how you use it... with the DPF in the exhaust you must use this truck like a DIESEL, haul a** and pull hard, power is not an issue, my cousins father bought an 08 ram 2500 quad cab four door, long bed 4x4, a 48' fifth wheel camper, and a jet ski, total combo length, 71 feet, has no problem AT ALL getting up to 80mph on interstate to pass people can you believe that!!???? Now when you drive your truck like a car and the engine has not been properly broken in, expect to have to dpf plug up and the truck will go into regeneration mode... now if you notice a power problem in time, the dealer can purposely put your truck into regen mode to clean out the dpf, cummins has also sent out a turbo cleaning kit, a technician will drill and tap a hole in the exhaust turbine, and use cans of cleaning agent to remove soot from turbo to keep it from burning up. all of this will cost you nothing, just a trip to the local dealer. once your engine is broke in problems are pretty much nonexsistant. the dpf will have to be replaced at some point due to ash buildup but oh well. just treat it like a tow rig and you will be fine, power is NOT and i repeat not an Issue. all the magazines are biased and dont tell you the whole story... You will have recalls and such but with all of todays technology, you can expect that kind of cr*p... I say get the 6.7 especially if the price is right. i wish that i had the money. if you really want a killer rig get the 6speed manual. good luck and if you want to trade trucks look me up!!!!p.s. two things to watch for, leaking p/s gear box and dripping front crank seal... very common problem... warranty covers both. good luck again

Wow 98 k, thats the kind og info I'm looking for as well as the others. I use this back and forth to work, 16 miles a day and pulling a 36 ft. bumper pull trailer. Only have 14 K miles. Trying to stay away from a manual due to knee issues and incase wife needs to drive but its not out of the questions. This is my first cummings and won't be my last. I may wait untill 2010 for the tool boxs in the bed in the 3/4 tons. My camper weighs 9000 lbs and I love the way it puls this thing, I tend to baby any truck, not run hard and build up speed instead of hammering the throttle. If I understand you the 08 needs to be driven like a big rig, fast and pulling hard. does this keep the stuff you mention cleaned out ? Thanks for responding to this , its great info.

you dont need to pull fast or really hard, you just need to make sure that the engine IS doing some work. one other thing i forgot to mention is that with the 6.7 you cant let it sit and idle like the 5.9, no doubt in the winter and year round it needs time to warm up, but no sitting in a parking lot for hours letting it idle, THIS WILL plug the DPF... high fuel prices should also prevent excessive idling ... now a guy at work, has an 07' dually with the 6.7, 4x4, reg. cab. auto, gets 20mpg highway when NOT pulling his camper, you wont see this mileage untill the motor is broken in, could take 15000 miles or 30 depending again on how you use it. once the dpf has seen some work and the rings get seated youll be golden. personally i wouldnt screw with the RamBox just due to the fact that there really isnt that much room, you still lose bed space, and it is a $2000 dollar option, an inbed or overtherail tool box is less than half that price and if you need more space it can be removed... although i have heard it rumored that dodge is going to introduce a longbed megacab dually in 2010... the new fenders are going to be an integral part of the bed, no more bolt on fiberglass, like the chevys, the fenders are just pounded out of the same skin as the bedsides. ![]() i would get while the getting is still good, just my opinion, my boss may not be happy but, i try to tell it like I see it. wont lie for ya but I wont lie against ya... hopefully this helps, as far as the manual, dodge hasnt had any problems with the new 6 speed auto, so its now safe to buy an auto dodge with a cummins before 07 i wouldnt have bought one. I just like manuals, direct connection to the motor, less torque loss...blablabla.. you know the stuff. i just like shifting, plussssss you can make more black smoke with a manual... heeheehee... ![]()
