Unhappy 1998 Ram 1500 Lean gas ping/Check Engine Light

I have a 1998 Ram 1500, 4WD, AT. The truck suddenly began to ping, like a lean fuel pinging, when I would accelerate. When I back off, the pinging stops. Then the Check Engine light would come on. Once, it began to flash.
The scanner read MISFIRE CYLINDER EIGHT
I use premium gas.
I have already changed the cat/converter; the plenum pan gasket; cap and rotor.
I checked the wires and plugs (recently installed), they appeared to be okay.
I did a compression test on the #8 cylinder, and it was fine.
I heard of an older Mopar TSB regarding reprogramming the PCM due to these exact symptoms. Any thoughts?
This is my ride for both highway to work and off roading.
Help!!
Today, 02/22/09, when I accelerated, the Check Engine light would flash; when I got off the pedal and simply cruised, it stayed steady on. This happened every time.
????????????????????????????????

does it smoke when you start it? i had this problem, it was my plenum gasket under the intake manifold....replaced and now it works fine....what happens is the oil seeps in the plenum gasket and runs down into the cylinders and fouls the plugs.....
mine was both back cylinders. plenum and intake gaskets were like 24$ i also put a n new water pump on at the same time....if you need help , let me know!
