Engine acts like out of gas

Have 84 Dodge 1/2Ton, When I drive the truck for 2+ hours it randomly cuts out - this also about the same time when I used at least a 1/2 tank of gas and the truck acts like it runs out of gas. My wife has brought me gas a couple of times within 5 miles of the house. I put gas in and off I go. Its done this too many times and now I believe that I have never run out of gas. Now when it takes this stupid spell I let it sit for about 5 min or so then off I go. But if I stop and top the tank off it does not do it again until about 1/2 tank gone. A couple of times I have let it almost run out of gas and it still does it. Also the fuel gauge gets to about 5/8 left on the gauge it goes past empty. Do not know what to try next. Thought the electronic box was going so I replaced it but it done it again. Thought that I might be picking something up or that the fuel filter was dirty - replaced it and if still does it. Grant it the truck does seem to be running better and now I am up to about 12.5 mpg. Do I need to pull the tank and do something there ? BTW - its 318, 340heads, purple cam, 850 Eldenbrock, headers, flow master duals

Welcome to the forum
when it happens did you loosen the gas cap and try starting it? it may not be venting and unable to draw fuel. I'ts poss there is a problem with the pickup tube.

Never thought of the cap - its got a cap that you do not have to remove to fuel up - its got a flapper in it.
When ever it does this it will start back up
Whats involved with changing the pickup tube - and would that have anything to do with the fuel gauge issue

hmmmm...... i had the exact same problem with my 87 with a 318. girl ran it over so i never did get to investigate it. i had just filled up the 30 gallon tank so i ended up dropping it to retrieve my, at that time, paycheck. out of 26 gallons of gas, 2 and one half of them were water, trash and sediment. i imagine it was picking up water and trash once it got down to a certain point.
