backup lite issue

Having problems tracking the backup lite issue - they will not work unless used a toggle switch. Turn the switch on the lites come on like they should when you put in reverse - but when you put it in drive they stay on. The only way to turn them off is turn the switch off. What route should I take now

stuck sensor on the tranny? your shift linkage depresses a ball switch to activate your lights. could be stuck.
