99 1500 is backfiring when cold

My 99 ram sport seems to be backfiring when it is cold. I can step on the gas and it goes away. The check engine light also comes and goes about every 5 days. Any suggestions??

take to autozone and have them read the codes on it. this will give a general direction to which part is failing or becoming problematic. could be as simple as time for a tuneup.

I agree with brad scanning it is the first thing to do,there could be a buildup in the distributor and its jumping to another cylinder when cold.

I don't agree put it on a real scanner not an autozone code reader

having a code read is cheaper than having it scanned. if this problem can be fixed by having the code read for free rather than paying someone to scan it, than i imagine the person in need here would like to go that avenue.
