1996 dodge 2500 Engine tranny interchange

we have a 1996 dodge 2500 with a 5.9 liter engine and a 46re transmission we have changed the engine to a 2001 5.9 but a few weeks later the seal in the tranny blew. is the 1996 tranny compatable with the 2001 engine? or do we need a newer tranny too?

I think they are the same, Look at the electrical connectors and see if the electronics are any different, but if I recall, they are the same transmission.
