Rear end noise

Maybe someone out there can solve this mystery for me. It is a 2007 3500 dodge with the 6.7 L engine 4X4. I don;t know the gear ratio and don;t know how to find them. It has the auto trans and shifts perfect and has 187K miles on the truck.
Here is the problem: when letting up un the accelerator there is this terrible clattering noise coming from the rear end which stops at about 10 miles per hour. There is no noise when running down the road or taking off. The trans shifts perfectly and no clanging beteen shifts. U joints are OK and carrier bearing is good.

Welcome and howdy from TEXAS. It might be the posi unit if it has one and you can find out what gears it has on the glove box. Also if you changed the rearend oil one must add a additive so that won't happen.

Thanks for reply. I just bought the truck and it does look like the oil had been changed recently as there was oil around the filler plug. What kind of additive should i use? ooor is it too late for that?

Thanks for reply. I did just buy the truck and there was no warranty on it. Is the dealer responsible for this repair regardless of mileage (187K) or who owns it? I may be learning something here that is good to know.

i thought about the warranty also but they wont cover 187K on the clock. i think the 07s had a 75 or 100 maximum. if it is chattering, the damage is probably already done. hav you pulled the plug and examined what the fluid looks like or if there are metal shavings in the pumpkin?? when you rattled the joints, did you shake the pinion as well to test for movement??

How the heck does a 2 year old truck get 187k on it? That's 260 miles a day, 365 days a year.

someone in sales or service would be my first guess. met a gentleman once with a 2 year old navigator that had already broken 200K. he sold medical supplies.

Yeah, but a 3500 4x4 with a 6.7 isn't your typical sales or fleet vehicle.
