unfortunate event

Well, with the passing of a close friend, I was left a 1987 dodge d50 2 wheel drive, with the 4 cylinder in it....... It doesnt run, and now, talking with his parents about his plans for the truck(he was only 15) I have a new build to do, and this one is gonna happen as soon as I get the truck......
My question is, how hard is it to stuff a 318 into the d50, and what am I gonna need? Im converting to 4x4, with 33 inch tires, and needing a v8, with auto transmission, and tough transfer case....... This is my first dodge, and I Know nothing about them..... so any help and insight would be apreciated......... money is no problem, and Im doing this as a "rememberance build" OH, and Thanks for your help fellers,

Do something on the truck that will have some rememberance of him. I know you will.
Good Luck.

Well I think I saw a 90s Dodge Dakota with a 318 in it and it had some space in it. Idk though man.

i would definitely do a "in rememberance of ..." in the back glass. pass or condolences from the TAD.
daddy used to have a d50 long ago. memory serves me right, that was a tiny, tiny truck. you already know most of what you are going to have to do even though it is different make. in other words, dont make it more complicated than it already is. the 318 is a very simple engine to work on. you are going to have to rearrange the motor mounts so break out the welding supplies. with as short as this thing is, be careful concerning height of the suspension versus the driveline angle.

Sorry to hear about your friend make sure and tell his parents that we sent our condolences to all the family. Next a 318 engine will last a long time I hope things work out better than expected.

SO, after doing somemore listening to his parents, The truck is going to be a mud pit/street truck....... SO, Im needing a transmission that will handle the abuse of mudding, and still shift decent for the street.... which one is going to do this the best, that will still bolt behind a 318?

well, we buried him today, and now that the funeral is over, Im gonna go pickup the truck sometime this week..... they want it gone, And I want to get started.......
I found a 1985 dodge 150 with a 318, and automatice behind it..... looking at the hubs it looks as though its full time 4 wheel, or full time hubs..... I can get it for 50 bucks, and 45 minute drive.......... The engine starts up, and runs, and with a tune-up, carburator rebuild, and headers, It'll run good...... the transmission fluid is a nice red color, and the guy just had it rebuilt 7800 miles ago, with all the receipts to prove it........ He says it has a shift kit in it, and I kinda felt like it when I drove it........ the front axe is shot, and the body is falling off the frame..... IF you hit a bump in it, the front clip moves enough to allow the fan shroud to hit the fan blades.... pretty funny......

Does anyone know what automatic trans would be behind this 318? or is there an easy way to tell?

I'd go with a 727. Dang things can be made near bulletproof, they're easy to repair, and will handle even a worked 318 with no problems.

wow sorry to hear about the loss.

I'm with bernie on the tranny. You cannot beat a 727 torqueflight.

Yeah, I had one on my old '70 Fury III with a fully worked 318. Pushing 400+ HP and the worst I ever did to it was blow a front seal trying to tow a truck.
