| front end noise 05 diesel I am getting a squeaking sound from my front right u-joint, bearing or possibly from the seal, it looks like the entire u-joint assembly has to be changed out ( the U-joint looks like it is pressed in and not removable) is this something a half way mechanically inclined person could replace. This noise could also be coming from the front bearing it is hard to tell. But I know for sure the U-joint needs to be replaced one of the seals is folded over, one more thing is i common for u-joints to go out I have replaced one on the rear drive line and it looks like I have a couple others that need replacing with folded over seals. This is a 05 2500 with 93,000 miles on it Thanks for any suggestions |

| unfortunatly quality of u-joints has diminished since around 99, and u-joints fail regulairly, best out there are the non serviceble spicers. its a bit of a job replacing those u-joints, you have to jack the vehicle and put stands under the axle, remove brake caliper, mount and rotor, then remove the cotter pin and large nut on the axle shaft (ceter of hub) there are four bolts behind the knuckle that thread into the hub assy, i belive they are 12 point 9/16s heads, then remove hub assy, BUT NOT EASILY! it is this point were alot of swearing and frustration occurs, they are typically seized to the steering knuckle. if you are able to get it off then removeing the shaft from the vehicle is easily done and you can then replace the u-joint. some tricks i have done to get out the very stubborn hubs is to use large dead blow hammer, and in extreme conditions using an approximatley 2.5"x 1" metal block and inserting it between an ear on the axle shaft, firing up the truck and let the powersteering pinch the block between the ear and the axle housing in effect forcing the hub out of the knuckle, I don`t recommend this as it is highly dangerous, you could easily loose a finger or eyeball if things go wrong. I guess i`ll let you decide if you want to go ahead with it....(-:

| thanks for the info, I have ordered 5 new u-joints, looking around last night under the truck I found a lot of them with rolled back seals and grease that had recently came out of them and of course they are all sealed with no grease fittings. How come there is no quality, anyway thanks again |
