Question '98 Dodge 1500

I have this problem with poor acceleration. The truck runs /idles rough at times. When I take off at a normal speed it backfires through the carb.If I feather the gas pedal and or floor it it will take off. I have replaced the plugs, wires, rotor cap, rotor and the fuel pump. That was costly. Does anyone have any idea what I need to do next, besides get a different truck!!

check timing, like mentioned and clean up the throttle body of carbon deposits paying close attention to the ports for your senors, the TPS and IAC located to the rear of the throttle body. also check the fuel regulator. it will be a shiny disc shaped apparatus located in the fuel line. this will cause similiar symptoms to what you are describing. they are fairly cheap but if you have access to a fuel pump pressure tester, you might check pressure first.
also for future referance, your truck does not have a carburetor if it is stock. 98s were EFI, non throttle body injection, meaning MPFI.

Had the truck in(being checked) since the first post, almost a week. The man has run it, tested it,has a pressure gauge on it. Hwy speeds,in town, and it still hesitates and looses power at certians times.Talked about sensors, fuel pump, dirty injectors,etc..he cant seem to find the problem..guess its time for another truck. Only has 123,000 on it..

checked timing on it yet?? popping through the throttle body is a sure sign of timing problems. could be due to a junp in the timing chain or various other problems associated with such.

Not for nothing but... If that shop can't find the problem after having the truck for a week I'd find a different shop.

As Brad has said, popping back through the intake is almost always caused by a problem with timing, and timing issues are fairly straightforward to deal with.

Thanks for all your input.I havent had the timing checked yet.I dont drive very much and it seemed to run better, then it started to "pop" again and "backfire".Still acts like its hesitating/fluttering/missing at cruising speeds. I think I will get it into another shop and have the things done that you described.
