| Auto trans? Hi Guys, A new guy to this forum and hope you can help. I just bought a 1997, 3500, 12 valve, automatic with a problem with the trans. Hope ya can help? When it's first started up it shifts into gear and goes good through it's gears. When I stop and put it in park to open a mail box or what ever, put it back into drive it don't do nothing??? Shut the engine off, start it back up it will than go back in gear and do OK? What gives? |

| try down shifting manually after you stop. if it goes into gear you might need a rebuild

| no treat the shifter on your colume as a manual shift all the way down to first and shift up at around 2000 rpm or so. do that all the way thought is you have to do that all the time its time for a rebuild.

| It's got all the gears, shifts when in drive also. Do you know if like, when you put it in drive and you can feel it go in, is that part mechanical or does the computer actually control that part to? |

| the actual park to drive or reverse is manual. but now that i got back and read your post again you might not need a rebuild after all. sounds more like a linkage issue or maybe your not pulling the column shifter back far enough sometimes

| OK, so If I unhook the linkage under the truck and hand shift it on the trans, should I feel it click into the next gear like on an older trans like a turbo 350, 400 and others for example? Or is it like some of the newer automatics where the linkage has to be spot on or it could slide anywhere before or past the gear it should be in? I thank you for your help on this. |

| It will click in to place. Just check for warn, loose, or linkage.

| It's about as far as I can go now without taking it to a pro. Looking at It, it kinda looks like an old 727 torque flight trans. But at 68 years old I better not tangle with it. Retired, I just have 1/4 the tools I used to have anyway. Thank You very much for all your info. This is a nice Forum and I shall be lingering. Tiz my first Cummins to play with. |
