2006 Dodge Ram 3500 Diesel Overcharging

I have a 2006 Dodge Ram 3500 Diesel Overcharging and burning up new batterys. Its making them smoke and boil out. I have another 06 truck i can trade parts with if someone can give me an idea of what i need to do. I am a mechanic and only have a handheld scanner. I can change the alternator or the PCM Power control module which is the fuse panel under the hood .. they just want it to have a fancy name so u wont work on it yourself. Maybe it needs a flash which i would have to take it to the dealer to have done. Or i can just change it out with the other truck... Help!! LOL and here is my email cc1duke@hotmail.com and i can take and pictures u need me to and make them where u can see so u can try to help me

Thanx in advance

sounds like the regulating unit is gone bad in the alternator and not discharging. does this not fit under your factory warranty?? i would try and make it stick to them while i could.

Welcome to the forum John.

May want to check the Brn/Gry field control is good.
Goes back to C1-pin7 on Eng Cntrl Mod.
Think that gen is grounded both w/ mount and wire.
Clean and tight ?

I'd replace the alternator with a single wire unit then. They're self-regulating and cheaper than replacing the computer.

will your scanner read the field voltage to the alt, since you say it is controlled by the pcm? what voltage are you getting at the batteries, could there be a short between the field wire and another source of power? have you disconnected teh fiel wire from the alt to eliminate the chance of an internal short, which would over power it?

That's the wire I'm talking about. If checking it as leo or I suggested
doesn't get it, may want to go with Bernie's idea. Not many pieces here.

Think the dealer may have messed you up with the flash or bad Front Cntrl Mod.
Turns are done by data lines on that truck if I understood correctly.

So is that one of the 300 or so trucks they "forgot" to put
the cab clearance lights on ? As long as you are having dealer work...
