| Found a local shop with a brake lathe! I'll get the drums cut Saturday and see what happens.

| Got the drums cut today ($30 for the pair) and the guy did a nice job on them. Popped 'em back on the Dakota, adjusted the shoes for a very slight drag and took the truck for a spin. Everything is nice and quiet now... But I've heard that (okay, I've NOT heard that) before. We'll see how it sounds in a few days.

| Day one with no noise, we'll see what happens tomorrow. If it goes a week with no problems I'll consider the problem fixed.

| No, I don't think so... First off, a good set of drums for that truck is going to run about $70-80 each, which we don't have at the moment. Second, those were the OEM drums which had never been cut, and still have plenty of meat left. (My g/f is really, really easy on brakes.) Third, the way the problem started happening, very suddenly, makes me think something else is the cause. I'm just not sure what yet. I think my next step is going to be to change all the hardware on both sides, and see if that helps. The hardware that's on there now is, I think, all original. While the springs all seem good, with good tension, installing all new hardware won't hurt anything and is pretty cheap (about $20). The truck does have rear ABS, but I've never felt it come on, not even sliding on ice, so I'm not sure the system is working. The ABS light on the dash cycles as normal during startup, so I'm assuming the system is passing its self-test and is probably functional, but as I said, I've never actually felt it kick in. Because of that I'm starting to wonder if this problem might be ABS related. At the same time, the front brakes, which we've had trouble with before, are starting to grab and pulse a little, so I suspect a warped rotor. I'll pull those and get 'em cut next weekend, and throw on a set of new pads. That should eliminate the front brake problem and let me concentrate on the rears.

| did a quick read through and did not see if you had flushed the brake fluid, might be getting thick and making the shoes hang

| You're correct, I haven't flushed the fluid recently (last time was about two years ago) so that's also on my list of things to try.
