1998 Dodge 1500 Rear end problem

Good morning I am new to this site. 98 dodge 1500 When I hit the gas the rear right side has a bang. This is only if I hit the gas like spinning tires. this is a 5.9 4X4 sport. I do not know the rear end ratio. just found out how to find spec. The truck is posi? Is there a ring in rear end to lock tire? Also when I pulled tir off the wheel turned so I think it is something to do with rear end not locking. This has started to be my toy new bed, shocks, tires, looking for door, back sliding window, set up to repaint.

pull the plastic plug in the back and evaluate the fluid and make sure it is full and good color. to verify posi, lift by the pumpkin and spin one wheel. if the other tire spins the opposite direction, then you have a limited slip. while lifted, shake each wheel for play in the bearing.

Thanks will check today. Also yesterday I was backing up and heard a whinning in the back same side. The truck has 182000 on it. Maybe I will start looking for a complete rear end.

whinning is characteristic of gear or bearing problems. there is really no sense in replacing the whole rear end when you can replace the individual component that has failed. since you are running a 4wd, you would also have to find a rear end to match the gear set your has. since your truck has 3.54 gears, you will have to go back with those to match the front setup.
lift the rear end and check the wheel bearings first. this is where i would start considering what you have described. if it done this all the time, i would have suggested shaking the joints. might want to do that anyway as a good maintenance practice.
