Help!!!

I have a 2000 Dodge truck, 250 4 wheel drive. At times it will start bucking & snorting, sounds like it is back firing in the front end down towards me feet, not real loud. If I give it more gas it will stall out, if I feather the gas it comes out of it. It will run like this for 2 seconds up to about a minute. I've had it in 2 different garages for a total of 7 times & no one can figure out whats wrong with it. HELP!! I can't afford to keep bringing it in for them to "try" to fix the problem.
Also it will run good for days & other times it will do it daily.

Has anyone pulled codes on this yet? What were they?

I would think that the 2 garages I had it in would have done that. I've had new plugs & wires put in twice, a different intake with new gaskets & botls, injecter replaced, a new speed sensor, distributor cap & rotor, cleaned carbon from the AIS Motor......& it still isn't running right.

It sounds to me more like they didn't pull codes and just threw parts at what "might" be the problem.

Okay, is your CEL or SES on? (check engine or service engine soon lights)

Does it come on when the problem happens?

Most likely the answer is yes to one or both of those questions, as I can't see an engine running like that and not setting a few fault codes. If you have a scanner it would be helpful to see what codes are stored. If there aren't any then they may have been cleared, so you'd have to check again the next time the problem happens. If you don't have a scanner quite a few parts places will scan for free (Autozone is one) so you can try that. The ideal situation would be to actually have a scanner on it when the problem happens, but other than putting a recorder on it and leaving it there I don't think that's going to happen.

BTW, some more info on the truck would help, such as which engine, mileage, model, etc.

The check engine light will come on for a day or 2 & tehn go off. Both garages said they would put it on a computer as it will tell them what the problem was.
It's a 2000 Dodge Ram 250 4 wheel drive
160,000 miles
Not sure on the engine..........
Have always had the oil changed at 3,000 miles
I use the truck for pulling horse trailers, snow plowing, & my usual running around.

Okay, Dodge didn't make a 250 after about 1994, so I'll assume it's a 2500. Gas or diesel? I'll assume gas since you said cap & rotor and wires were changed (unless someone ripped you off really badly), so that leaves either the 5.9L or the 8.0L

V8 or V10? How many plugs; how many wires? If 8 then it's the 5.9, if 10 then it's the 8.0

Okay, so it's the 5.9L, which is a pretty decent motor but something of a gas hog.

Your next step is to head to your local parts place, preferably while the SES light is on, and ask them to pull the codes. That will give us a better idea of what the computer thinks the problem is and we can work from there.

Tell me, when the truck starts acting up are you noticing any smoke or smell? I suspect it's going extremely rich, which could be caused by a number of things. The fact that two different shops changed cap, rotor, wires and plugs makes me think there were timing issues involved. Not really sure why one shop changed the intake though, that has me baffled (unless it physically broke or cracked in half).

No smell & no smoke. Once it comes out of it it runs great. On Friday I drove it about 15 miles, ran great! On Sat. I drove it about 1.5 miles & it started acting up, feathered the gas & it came out of it & ran good the rest of the way home.......about a mile.
The guy said my intake was shot so that's why he changed it.
When the engine light comes on if I'm near a garage I can ask them to put it on the computer & tell me the codes. When/if the engine comes on, it will go off again in a day or 2-3.

I wonder if it could be the TBI you're talking about, and not the intake manifold?
