Angry dead ram

My '88 Ramcharger 360 4bbl. died quietly a couple of weeks ago. I stopped at a light and the thing just died and hasn't started since. Got gas, got sparks, thought the timing might be the problem (chain slipped?? put in a new one), but so far still no go. seems to fire weakly once in a while, but just won't catch. Any ideas??

Arent all dodges dying quietly anyway,,, Just kidding. Check TDC on your distribiutor and see if it coordinates with your number 1 plug should give you a good indication if it is timing.

Been there, done that. New cap and rotor new ballast resistor. The ignition control module works fine in another truck, so I assume it's ok in mine. Mega sparks anyhow. Is it possibly a stuck float?? there seems to be a lot of fuel getting in to the cylinders, but not pouring out of the carb.

Aimply turn to the basics, Fuel fire and air. If you have fire then it is either fuel delivery .or spark timing. Stuck float either wont allow any fuel, or will just dump fuel constantly.

Pretty much my interpretation of things. I have to travel for the next week, but the next step is to go after the ignition timing in a really serious way, although I don't really know what else to do beyond what I have already checked out. As far as I know, the distributor is either right or 180 out, and right now, everything seems to line up OK (and how could it jump 180 and not have a broken shaft, which woould mean the rotor should not be turning. Got me really interested.

If you suspect distribuitor damage, Take the cap off and turn the motor over, The rotor bug should be turning. As far as jumping timing exactly 180 this is very uncommon. Usually achieve 180 out after a rebuild ot maintenance where the distribuitor was removed.

Well, don't that beat all! I got back to town yesterday after thinking aboout the problem. Today pulled #1 plug and stuck the compression tester in to make sure I was lining things up right. Got TDC then pulled the cap to look at the rotor. It was pointing directly at wher #1 should be. Trouble was, the #1 wire was 180 degrees away. Changed the wires and voila, it fired right up. The question is: how was it running before with the wires 180 out? How did the rotor shaft magically move 180? Got me beat for sure.

I am glad everything worked out, So it had jumped time and with the new chain you had 1 tdc exhaust stroke instead of compression. No biggie. Great job finding it. Your distribuitor was installed 180 out when the last bit of work was done. That explains the plug wires being 180 out on the dist.
