cranking problem 99 ram 1500

hello,to all in the forum ! I'm new at this, i was wondering may some one could help me with a problem I'm having. 1999 1500 dodge ram 4x4360. when you turn the key it acts like its going to fire for a second but then it doesn't, i took the battery cable off for about 5 minutes, finally it cranked. after trying this a few times along with releasing pressure from the fuel line. i was thinking may the crank senser. has any body had this proble?

Releasing fuel pressure does not effect the cranking of the engine. When the key is turned on the fuel pump runs for approximately 2-4 secs pressuring the system. It does not run again until the engine is started. If you turn the key off and then back on the pump will cycle on again.
I can't think of any reason to remove the battery cable, doing so loses your clock and radio presets but does not clear all the codes in the ECM.
The crank position sensor could be going out, but you didn't mention any codes in the computer. (By the way, slotting of the holes on this sensor is like advancing the timing, and remember how much better the motor ran when the timing was advance about 4 degrees)
In the older systems when the ignition module was going out the module would cause the coil to spark once when the key was turned to crank. It would not spark again until the key was cycled off and then back on. With help from a friend check for fire from your coil. Is it sparking?
I am assuming the motor will crank and just not start. Is this true?

#1- Fuel pump runs while engine is cranking.
#2- Removing battery cable does clear your codes and also resets all your readiness moniters as well as your adapts. It could also set a code for loss of bettery power.
#3- Slotting the holes on this sensor is like advancing the timing. What in gods name are you talking about. The cranksensor is located in the bellhousing which gets its signal from a slotted ring on the flywheel.

From the little bit of unclear info from majior woofer it sounds like a battery/ connection problem. He needs to clarify the problem? Cranking or just clicking?
