Need your supported opinion Please

Hello, I have been a Chevy guy for my whole life. I have a s-10 currently. I plan on keeping it as well. I work construction and it would be nice to have a full sized truck. I am leaning towards a Diesel. I would only consider buying a Dodge Cummins or the Fords Powerstroke. I have now driven both. I personally believe the Dodge has more power than the Ford does. I am currently looking at a 96 Dodge Diesel with an extended cab long box with a 5th wheel ball in the bed. It has an automatic tranny with 134,000 miles. There was a new tranny put in 8,000 miles ago he said this tranny has the upgrades and such in it, and told me that the old one was slipping a little so he replaced it. It sits on new tires, he put 1 new battery in to replace a weak battery. He is asking 8,900 for this truck. I was wondering if its sounds like a decent truck as well as the tranny. Do people have a lot of problems with auto tranny's in a truck like this? I did like the Dodge I drove for a little bit they seem to have a lot of snap to them unlike the Fords. What are advantages to getting a Dodge Cummins vs. the Ford Powerstroke? What should I look for when buying a Dodge Diesel this old? Your help would be greatly appreciated.

I have heard that Dodges have too much power for their tranny's and rear ends. So I have been told, thats why I ask...as for Pickupgirls comment, its hard to find a good used manual truck that is a 3/4 ton and diesel. I've seen one since I started looking 5 months ago. As for power my old boss had fords and I really didnt see much power. My current bosses dodge has so much power going down the freeway its not even funny. 75 mph and it climbs like it just came out of a stop light. Not even funny. But for real anyone else got some insite?

Cummins is a strong motor. Do they have tranny problems? Yes. IMO the tranny's behind the cummins are to small. As for the the rearends not gonna have many problems out of them unless they were severly abused! Powerstrokes are a Strong motor as well. Me personally I'd go with the powerstroke. I don't care for dodges interiors. Either of the two you can invest about 1000 bucks and have a ground pounding diesel.

As for your question. Is the truck a 1 ton or a 3/4 ton? 8900 seems like a fair price if the truck is in really good shape. And for being that old it really has low miles for a diesel.
