Gear swap 4.10 to 3.73

I reviewed the current threads and did not see any that addressed this topic. If I missed it sorry and please advise.

I'm considering a purchase of a 2500 dodge 4x4 with hemi and 5spd manual. The gear set up is 4.10. I will not be doing a significant amount of hauling and wanted to switch the set up to 3.73s for better gas mileage.

Any comments on: the fuel savings vs change out cost /
how difficult is the change out /
recommendation for qualified mech in western Pa. area/
is there an significant engine wear with the higher gears
Thanks,

Assuming that you are using a stock size tire, (approx 32") the amount of engine rpm that you will decrease at highway speed is a little over 200 rpm. You may never notice a change in mileage. Heak a slight change in driving style might net better gas mileage than the expense of changing the gear ratio. Since you have a 4x4, you will have to change both differentials. It would take many miles to see a return on your investment there. Gear changes are not too cheap, and you have to do it twice, one for the front, and one for the rear. I feel that the slight loss in performance, with little gain in mileage would not be a worthy change. Have you considered just running a slightly larger tire? This would have the same effect on the overall ratio.

,

I'm with 75.....not much of a difference with your current setup if you swap. Go with a bigger tire like 75 mention. Gear ratio is determine by engine performance and/or purpose of the truck or car. In your case, you're okay.
