r.f.axle u-joint

howdy newby here.replaced u joint on right front axle on 98 dodge ram 1500 4x4 replaced axle. owner of truck calls me back 2hrs. later says the truck locked in 4wheel by itself at40 miles an hour,broke rear axle pinion in half,threw rear driveshaft,busted transfer case off transmission.all my fault ???? lil help please???? mr. pontiac

Mechanically impossible!
The replacement of the front axle u-joint has nothing to do with the rear of the truck. What happened to the front of the truck? If the truck went into 4wd, it would have only gone into 4hi, which would not have damaged anything. The manual even suggests that 4hi can be operated at speeds up to 50 mph. Now if it was engaged,and driven on the street without a way to slip, the transfer case will blow up, but that would be driver error, and would not cause the rear pinion to break. As a matter of fact the only way to break a pinion gear that way, is to really stomp on the gas with both tires getting great traction, usually the driveshaft breaks first though, and then the t-case.
