Question 97 1500 Cargo Van Rearend noise

I have noticed for the last 5k miles a loud whinning coming from the vans rear section. The van has 105 k miles on it, the whine is more noticable at 55 or over. I think the lube in the diffrential has been overlooked at services, I checked it and had to add one qt. That didn't really quiet it down after a little test ride. What is the worst case problems for this situation? Will the rear end have to be rebuilt, how much? Are there any wheel bearings on that back axle that could be the problem? Joe in N.C.

there are alot of things back there that could make a whinning noise. jack the rearend up and spin the wheel to determine where the sound is coming from. if it is a wheel bearing, you are going to have some slack up and down if you shake the wheel. find out first exactly where it is coming from and we can help you better from there.
you say that it was a quart low. where did it go?? can you look at the axle housings on the wheel side and see if any has come out from a busted seal??

yes, if that looks clean, check around the diff and see of any tell tale signs where it could be leaking.

Mech took van for test drive

On my 97 cargo 150 van he said it was the axle bearings, the cost here in NC for labor and parts( timken bearings) will be 850.00. This will include every bearing and seal in the whole diffrential axle assmy. The work is going to be done this friday and will give you a update after that. Dale thanks alot for giving me some feedback. Joe

Thumbs up Like new rear end

Had the garage replace all the bearings and seals in rear end whole axle assby. It's now very quiet, so I'm one happy guy. The ring and pinion looked great. He said the two pinion bearings looked the worst of all the bearings .

Thanks Brad

Yea it great to move on and not worry about that sound anymore. I hope to get at least 250k out of this van. It's not a bad ride for a cargo van. THANKS AGAIN Joe
