Hemi Engines on Ram 1500's Currently own a 1997 Ram 2500. Quite frankly, I'm tired of throwing money into this truck. It has 131,000 miles on it. I've put new ball joints on, steering items etc. Anyways, looking at 1500's since I don't need the size of a 3/4 ton. Last week, test drove a couple of 2005 1500's. Both had hemi 5.7 liter engines. According to the dealer, both trucks should get 14 to 18 mpg. However, the one we drove showed at most 6 mpg according to the overhead console. My 3/4 ton gets about 11 to 12 on a good day. My question is..... what mileage is everyone getting from these hemi engines? The only towing I do is about 7 times a year with a featherlite 2 horse bumper pull trailer. So, what are y'all getting with the hemi engine???? Lucky...

Welcome to the site. I own an 07 F350 PSD CC 4x4, with a few mods. My truck usually eats a Honda or two as a snack, and if it is still hungry, we go looking for Hemi's... Here Hemi Hemi Hemi ........ Was waiting for a while to use that one, glad you posted, but seriously, the reason the new truck only showed 6 mpg, is because the dealership only test drives those things on the street so the thing has zero chance of obtaining decent mpg numbers associated with highway driving. Not to mention, one of its selling features is its power, so the salesguy usually stabs the skinny pedal to demonstrate this. It illustrates good power, but also shows the vehicles ability to consume gas. However, this truck should be capable of 15+ mpg if you can stay off of the loud pedal.

I have a 2006 Dodge 1500 SLT Big Horn Edition 4X4 with the 5.7 Hemi. Around town I get between 11 and 12 mpg...on the freeway and traveling about 65 mph and going for about a 2 to 3 hour drive I average about 18 mpg...sometimes more and sometimes less. I find that the overhead console reads about 1 to 1.5 mpg better than what you actually get when you figure out the mileage after a fill-up. The reading you got on the oc may have been because it had not been reset for quite a while and therefore had registered a lot of idle time with the engine running without the vehicle actually moving.

Thanx for the replies. Generally, I take sticker mpg ratings with a grain of salt. A woman who boards horses here on the farm has a 2005 Dodge 2500 w/diesel. She has been getting overall around 21 to 24. Not too bad. Yeah, debating on whether its worth going with a hemi engine or just the next downsize in engine power. Around here, the hemi gets about $800 more for trucks in the 2004 to new range. The search continues. Lucky...

| Hemi Mpg I drive an 04 1500 Quad with a HEMI and get about 14.5 mpg on average even in the mountains of West Virginia. I took the truck to Disney World in January and averaged 18.6 mpg going and 16.8 returning (a lot more uphill travel on the return). But, I have to really work hard to keep my foot out of the throttle because the HEMI is an awesome engine to drive. I have no regrets switching from Ford. NONE!

Well, I have a 2003 1500 with the Hemi, put in headers and changed the air filter to a Airaid intake I am getting between 19 and 21 on the open road. And a little less around town. I like the truck and enjoy driving it, I have had Fords and Chevy's but I like the Dodge just a little more. I am thinking about adding a super chip for towing and just to have the extra power, it may cost me more to drive but, if you want to have the toys you need to pay for them.
