'85 Ram Backfiring

Hello everyone, back again with problems. On an earlier post I had the same issues, well, a different coil solved the problem. The problem has returned. Starting to do the same thing all over again. Something is cutting out and I am not sure what. The coil was changed and it has been just great for about 2 months. Now it seems to have a slight miss and then starts the backfiring again. Any ideas?
Thank you,
Colin

What baffles me is that the initial coil change fixed the problem for a short time and now it is back again.

Well, here is what I know so far: spark plugs black and sooty, I though maybe it was a vacuum advance because the truck idles great, but when put in gear and given throttle it srumbles and runs like ****. It does not have a vacuum advance at all. Any other ideas as to where to look.

Another point, it has back fired so hard it blew the lines that go to the air pump at the pump itself.

Sounds like my 85 Dodge Pickup

At least part of the trouble may be a clogged catalytic converter and maybe a clogged mini oxygen converter if it has one. I drilled a couple of 1/2 inch holes in the exhaust pipe just in front of the catalytic converter and my truck runs much better. Mine wasn't backfiring very much but it would bog down and die when I tried to accelerate. Now I've gotta get that converter replaced and have the mini oxygen converted checked.

Well I finally found the problem. It turned out to be the ignition. I wired in the older style ignition with the ballast resistor and it now runs great. The engine is a little tired now (after who knows how many backfires) but no more backfiring. I appreciate all your help. If anyone else has this problem, I can send information on where to find a wiring diagram to change yours.
