2000 4x4 issues with a Durango

My Wifes Durango all of a sudden will not go into 4 wheel drive (low or high). The shifter moves to each fine, the 4x4 indicator light does not come on, and you can tell it is not engaging....A mechanic buddy told me that it is an all mechanical system, but I still wonder if there is a fuse that I can check....the owner guide does not help much....Also to note is that it does not get put into 4 wheel drive all that much. Ususally only during winters....

Any ideas? Trying to avoid a huge repair bill.....

Thanks,

BuddaBelch

Should have vacuum controlled hubs on it. Could be something to do with the vacuum lines. I'm not sure if there is a specific vacuum pump just for the front diff. There should be a fuse for that circut.

hey buddabelch it sounds like a sencer within the system or like jw said. but after you get it fixed once a month you need to take it out so that you know it's done and engage the 4x4 so that is doesn't happen again do to lack of use. i go by a lil saying " if you don't use it you will lose it "
