| I have a 2000 Dakota Quad cab 4.7 liter 4wheel-drive. The engine revs up about 200 to 300 rpms at highway speed for no apparent reason. Took it to a transmission shop and he told me the torque converter is slipping in and out but the computer isn't telling it to. New converter is 700 bucks but this guy isn't sure why it's happening. Anybody have this problem? |

| that definitly sounds like your torque converter clutch is slipping and losing lockup. might not be the tcc itself though maybe the tcc solenoid or tcc valve losing pressure

| The converter is probably not slipping, ( a converter has no clutches) it might be just engaging in, and out of lock-up, provided the problem is occuring in high gear. You did not describe when this occurs. Does it occur at wide open throttle, or between gears, or somewhere in the middle? |

| It may be a faulty vacuum diaphragm Jim "the greasemonkey"

| Check at the vacuum port of the diaphragm for transmission fluid or water Transmission fluid means the diaphragm is a leaker. Replace it. Water may have leaked in through the vacuum system, causing the diaphragm to rust or freeze during cold weather, and stick. A new diaphragm will fix the condition. Jim "the greasemonkey"

| ok, call me stupid but wheres the V.D.? I have looked all thru my haynes manual and can't find it. my buddies truck does this same thing. cruising along holding steady on the gas, hit a bump and the tech jumps a couple hundred rpm real quick and then settles back down, If your off the gas or pushing the gas it doesn't tach up. |

| a vacuum seal would make it act as though it was slipping? I know its not cause if you stomp down on the throatle in kick it into passing gear or even kick it down just a little it doesn't slip at all. |

| I would check it anyways, just to make sure. I would also check the fluid level and filter. Jim "the greasemonkey"
