my dad has been detailing cars for a hobby since he retired in 2001 and has never had a problem getting rims clean with off the shelf tire cleaner from the dollar store!

Could someone explain to me the chemistry that causes an inert material to react on the wheels?
I rarely clean the dust off the wheels since I can't see it while driving - that look doesn't bother me.
When I do clean them, I only use running water and a sponge brush. Complete clean and no chemicals.
Have been thnking about using the steamer hose on them but more complicated than I need.

my heated pressure washer cleans them up without looking back. now if i could find a way to lose new asphalt. i aint about to do a whole lot of scrubbing. and aluminum acid just doesnt work that good on that.

WD-40 works fantastic. Tree sap, road grime, and even chewing gum that someone spit out of the window.
If you can stand the smell, a little diesel works wonders on most of the sticky stuff too.

Wow, thanks for all the great input, Y'all. Never having had four wheel disc brakes my curiousity was peeked.

Big fan of WD40 for removing double stick type or duct tape glues from lots of plastic places.Little soak, little rubbing with folded paper towel.
