Newbie here, rear axle question

I'm new here and I have a question on Ford axles. My bent has always been GM. But GM trucks have been quite hard to get in our area. So 4 years ago I got a good deal on an 89' F-150 XLT extended cab and then last year a better deal on an 92' F-150 shortbed. I kept the XLT and gave the shortbed to my son.
Anyhow the rear differential in the 89' XLT is starting to get noisy after 206,000 miles, it is the type 19 axle according to the door tag. I have an opportunity to buy an 84' Bronco with the type 19 axle that has a 100,000 less miles on it for a parts machine. This Bronco has the fuel injected 302 like my 89' so it may be a decent investment.
Is there any difference between the 84' type 19 and the 89' type 19 axles? ie: ratios, and limited slip?
Thanks

Well for good or bad, I bought this whole 84' Bronco today. I figger for $40.00 I won't get hurt. I'll pull the engine, computer, trans and case and the rear differential and wheels and squash the rest. Hopefully the differential is the same ratio as in my 89' F-150. If not it's scrap tonnage also.

Steve:
I am afraid I did not see this post earlier, but it sounds like you recieveed quite the score for 40 bucks.

this is how ford breaks down axle codes:
19 is 3.55 open diff
17 is 3.31 open
H9 is 3.55 w/ limited slip
B6 is 3.73 w/ LS
This axle should be a direct bolt in for your vehicle with one exception. I believe that the 89 has an ABS sensor on the top of the diff, and it could be a different axle altogether.
I cant recall the year that ford started to use the 8.8 instead of the 9".
The ratios might be the same, but you may look at the tag on the diff to verify this.
You may also want to look to see if the axles are the same. This is as easy as looking for an inspection cover. The 9" will not have a cover, and the 8.8 will. You can install tha earlier 9" in the later truck, but you may compromise the rear abs.
Help me identify the rear axle, and we can help you determine if it can be installed under your truck.

Thanks for the reply. This must be the 8.8 axle as it has the rear cover. I pulled the cover 2 years ago and washed out the differential with diesel fuel and wiped it all out, then refilled it with Lucas gear lube. It's been pretty good but I've noticed over the course of the winter it has been getting noisier. I suppose I get the miles on me this old girl has, I'll make some odd noises too.

yeah, the 8.8 sounds about right. I am thinking that the mid 80's was a transition year when the 8.8 started to become standard.
It would be a real good idea to remove the cover from the bronco axle, and inspect the condition of the gears. You can then count the teeth on the ring and pinion to determine the right ratio. I never trust the id's, or tags on the diff.
Other than that you should be good to go with very slight modifications. You may also want to verify that the shock mounts are the same. Other wise you will need to modify them. Really a pretty easy swap, especially for the deal you got. Lots of parts on the bronco that are worth some money.
Transfer case, and rest of the drivetrain look alright?

I really haven't had a chance to look things over. The body is junk and most of the interior has been "reappropriated". mechanically things look to be all there except the ignition distributor. I found the speedometer in the back. It says 160,000 miles but who knows? Most likely the rear end in the Bronco hasn't had as tough a life as the F-150. The Bronco is an automatic transmission wheras the F-150 is a 5 speed stick. I've always understood a manual trans to be tougher on a differential than an automatic. I do plan on opening and cleaning the Bronco rear and setting it up with new seals and outer bearings if needed and put the new brakes and drums I put on the F-150 last July on the rear. I tried out a couple newer trucks both GM and Ford and didn't like any of the newer ones especially for the price. I'll see if I can get a few more years out of the old one. Amazing the respect a rusty old extended cab flatbed 4X4 gets from the $50,000 SUV bunch. Almost like they don't like being seen on the same stretch of road let alone doing something stupid in front of it.

Yeah, I hear you there. Good luck with your swap, you should get those few extra miles out of your good old truck.
