| 91 lariat sputtering problem Hey guys. all of ya know about my baby, my 91 f150 lariat. Well, here for the past couple of days, when i go to start it up, it will idle up to about 1000 rpm, then it will try and bog to about 600 and it will start sputtering. On a couple occasions, it has shut off at a low idle like that. If i try to put it in gear, as soon as i take it out of park, it will shut off. When i start it back up, it will do fine, although i have had it shut off twice on a couple occasions. When i finish driving it, when i get out of the truck, theres a faint smell of burnt oil. I was wondering if maybe it needs a new set of plugs and wires, or maybe if its something worse. can somebody help me out? thnx james "bubba" (bubbas91lariat)

| It sounds like a situation I had with my Ranger, and the plugs and wires helped, but it was actually a very small vacuum leak that was causing the sputtering. The burnt oil sends up a red flag that you got an oil leak, though, and I'm pretty sure that won't really cause it to sputter and die unless you were completely out of oil. The sputtering could be a lot of things, though. I'd start with the basics and do a tune up and maybe an oil change at the least before starting anything else.

| doubt it. changing the oil regularaly is always a good thing but I highly doubt it's going to help with the sputtering. like mentioned above it sounds like a tune-up is in order
