Post Help! 99 F250 7.3 drops dead after 2or 3 minutes

I have a 1999 Ford F250 w/ 7.3 L Diesel , 227K miles that just refused to start one night. I went back to it the next day and it started right up then dropped dead after 3 or 4 minutes.
I replaced the fuel filter, removed the air filter, checked the oil level in the high pressure oil pump (added a little) after sitting all night it will start up and run 3 to 5 minutes and drop dead and will not start again. I have followed every trouble shooting guide I have in the book and on the Ford Motor company DVD and I reached the point that I don't have the special diagnostic tools that it calls for to procede further.
It is getting fuel into the filter bowl, the electric fuel pump seems to be working fine.
I am hoping someone out there can help an ole dude in trouble! I really can't afford to take it to the shop but I can't walk to work either! Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

sounds like the cam postion sensor. very easy to change and only about 25-30 bucks now.

That would be my bet.

Welcome to the site:

Plenty of Ford PS guys here, and most of us love these trucks.
This sounds like a typicall CPS problem. The CPS is a cam position sensor, and is cheap and easy to replace. You can do it yourself. First one id a pain, but provides you with a real feeling of satisfaction once complete.
This is such a common problem, I carry an extra one in the glove box.
Also, I highly recommend a factory replacement OEM sensor. Many have not had good luck with the aftermarket units. The cost is about the same. Around 40 bucks.
This could be a TPS problem, and it could be a problem with a leaking windshield. Your symptoms did not indicate any of the other items, so the CPS gets my vote.

Ford now has a recall on those sensors.... Check with your local dealer and they will replace it or reimburse you if you have proof you have had it replaced already.

Thumbs up

God Bless You All! The CPS was indeed the problem!
I had a challenge getting it out once I got to it but I "got-r-dun and "Big Red" is back in action !

You guys are a wealth of great info and I am so grateful!:applaud :

I got the part for $27.95 at Autozone and had my "loyalty" card built up and I only paid $10.16 out of pocket!
Again Thanks for the info!
I will look into the reimbursement aspect of that also! TY TY TY
