I knew a guy that had a chevette with a diesel, pain to keep running inthe winter but got about 50 mpg with it. Probably wouldn't get that with todays fuel tho.

i remember them and i could get one. it would go along with the other five jettas i have lol. but they wernt much of a truck. they were alot smaller then the ranger diesel. they wouldnt preform like the ranger diesel would either.

and for the ranger. would it go faster if you put bigger tires on the back?

Not necessarilly. This would have made the drive ratio a little higher and without additional torque to pull it, it would not go faster. Matter of fact, that extra rolling resistance would have made it more difficult to accelerate. Stop and go performance would suffer.
Remember, for ever action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.
This is why differential gears are not 1:1, and you see rigs that perform heavy tasks with super steep gears. (very high numerical gears)
Speed is really based upon horespower and resistance, and not drive ratio's (to an extent)
For example:
Two almost (only a weight difference) identical vehicles, tire size, shape, engines, tires, etc.
Both have identical gear ratios, and lets say the ratios are 5.13:1.
One vehicle weighs 5 thousand more pounds than the other.
Now which vehicle will accelerate the best, and which one will have the best top speed?
The one with the lighter weight right? Top speed is limited by the resistance, and not by the gear ratio in this case. The engine would have to make more horsepower to achieve a higher speed, and a taller tire, or less gear ratio would not increase the speed it would hinder performance.
Ratios have little effect on overall speed. They have big effects on acceleration, but not as much to do with total speed.

Some IH Scouts had Perkins diesel engines in them back in 1976 or that's when I saw my first one in a Scout truck it was standard and yes it was slow.
