'99 ford ranger of a 67 year old friend

He has paid two places to dianoise the motor its a V6. Hes been told that it woun cost him 2K to have it fixed. I shop says its the head gasket lettig combustion gas into the cooling system and out the over flow? The says valves doing the same thing. I want to held this frien and am just testing this forum for advice. thx

I had a 99 to blow the head gasket. In my research the 3.0 is notorious for that. My symptoms were the same as your friends. I just waited to long to seek out this forum. I changed tstats and sensors, nothing helped and then it failed bigtime, cost me a rebuild, which I did myself, only to have a Cop total it out with less than a 1000 miles. So yes I would replace the gasket. 2grand sounds high to me
