All engines need good batteries to start. teh diesel has glow plugs and air warmers that draw power so the batteries have extra duty. make sure you change both, not just one

leolkfrm pretty much covered it. All engines require a power source to crank the starter over, giving them the ability to start. Yes, diesels need more power to start, partly becase of the high compression, but also because of other factors like leolkfrom stated. If the batteries are old, change them. Otherwise you are only delaying the inevitable by charging them. Good luck.

The 7.3 turbo diesel needs minimum 100 rpm during cranking to achieve enough injection control pressure to open the injectors.
