Did they ever get it right? I'm looking at buying a diesel truck for the first time, and know that the 7.3 engine is considered the best Ford made. But did they ever get the 6.0 right? If I want to buy newer than 2002, what year should I start?

Isn't the 6.0 a gas engine? My brother had one and boy did it use a lot of gas that's why he bought his HD diesel truck he's super happy with it.

| while the new 6.0's (2003-2004) did seem to have a higher failure rate they were still great engines. If you want to have some better piece of mind you can get an 05 or newer 6.0. They got almost all of the bugs worked out, but any year 6.0 still has a chance of EGR cooler problems and headgasket problems (from excess boost). The failure rate on these is actually low. You never hear about the success stories, only the failures... If you do get a 6.0 consider doing an EGR delete. Will not hurt performance, and can give you peace of mind knowing it will never cause a problem. GMC the 6.0 is a gas engine for Chevy, but Ford has a 6.0 Diesel (powerstroke)

In my personal experience, the 6.0's were always letting us down with literally all kinds of issues in the work vehicles. It got so bad that the boss was finding older 7.3's and swapping them out with the 6.0's and selling the 6.0's off to other companies. It's true that our vehicles got lots of abuse, but we weren't having any other engine issues with any of the other diesels or gas vehicles except with the 6.0's. Things got better with the newer 6.4's but the turbos kept loading up. That was our only trouble with the 6.4... Hope my vague insight helps...

My only issues with an 07 6.0 was a blown head gasket. (too much boost) The fix was ARP had studs, and I boost the snot out of it now. Some other small mods, but reliablity has stayed high. I cant complain about this 6.0. Currently building a 6.4 for a project and hope it is as reliable as th 6.0. That darn 6.4 is fast, I mean real fast, I can tell you that much. It gets after it!!!! Keep in mind, I had similar issues with the 7.3. While a very reliable engine, it was still prone to similar problems. R&D and current technology has kept these things running strong.
