Question about my 99 Ranger

I was changing my spark plugs the other day and wires because I have been needing to. I haven't changed them since I got them. The old plugs were white...burnt.

I got 6 of the new plugs and wires in. I didn't have no dielectric glue either to put on the plugs or boot. I can't get to the other 2 because of the air intake. It's been spitting and spurting. Dieing on me when I slow down and shaking. I bought some dielectric glue and try to put it on the plugs and boots but it's still shaking and dieing and farting...

My question is that if I take the air intake off, would I have to put a new gasket on or if I put a gasket maker on it....do I have to let it sit 24 hours before I can drive it again with the gasket maker on the air intake?

Sounds like you have a lean running condition. I would check for vacuum leaks around the engine and also check the EGR valve for leaks. Try pulling the vacuum pipe off the EGR valve and see if it makes any difference.

Are you absolutely sure you got the firing order correct when you hooked the wires back up? Did you change them one at a time?

You know what? Found out my problem.
Haha. I need to slap myself. It was a sensor off the air filter piece. Now it's running better. Problem though..is that I can't reach my other 3 spark plugs because of my air intake. Blah. To much to take off and I ain't got the time to mess with it and screw something up.

I HATE compact vehicles where the motor is in a small spot and you can't do jack to it!

Good man, glad you got the problem.
I have to agree with you about access but compact or not why can`t designers at least make things like plugs reasonable to replace?

bcooling is on a distinguished road
Make sure you get that plug changed. and yes its easier if you take the intake off to do it. I paid a guy to change the plug and I guess i got ripped. The original factory spark plug end fell off and danced ontop of the piston and chipped a valve going out. Anyway an unchanged wore out sparkplug can cause alot of problems.

Erwin, I have to agree with bcooling, change those last two plugs!! Besides, whats the point of starting a job if your not gonna finish it... *nudge nudge*

EDIT: Just realized you mention you already got 6 of the plugs in but have 2 left... I'm guessing you have the 2.5L 4cyl with 2 plugs per Cyl for a total of 8 right?
If this is the case heres a good little walkthrough of how to get all of them out. http://wiki.answers.com/Q/1997_Range..._plugs_removed

I'm not sure on the generations for that truck but I think that walkthrough can apply.

I have heard that some guys do have to take their intakes off which isn't too bad. Others have said the EGR valve also has to be removed to get to those last two. If you are forced to do this, you have to replace the gaskets for both the intake and the EGR!! The last thing you want is a vacuum leak!! At Kragen Auto Parts the Manifold gasket was around $8.00 (For a Felpro Brand) and around $2.00 for the EGR Gasket.

BTW, I hope you went with a platinum plug or something of good quality, as I imagine you would want to minimize the number of times you did this. Good luck!!

I guess manufactures just want you to mess up something so you can buy their parts and let mechanics do the work so you can't do it.

I plan to get the intake off sometime. Got that gasket maker stuff as well..

I got the plat. spark plugs.

Thanks for the website. It will be handy.
