steering wheel bounces and shakes?

i have a 1995 f-150. the steering wheel is real loose and it bounces around, when ever i turn the wheel it makes a spring stretching noise. at random the wheel will lock up and wont move unless i shake the wheel. does anyone have any idea what is wrong?

I know that on GM trucks some parts will wear under the steering wheel I would say just remove the wheel and see whats going on or buy a Chilton's manual or wait for a true ford fan to log on like 75K30 he knows a lot about fords.

Sounds like the upper column bearing is bad. Like gmc says you will have to pull the steering wheel to confirm.

i have a simple solution for this as i have done a couple with this same problem. go to the yard and buy a steering column for less than a c note. remove and install the one you just bought. replace the lock cylinders so that you keep the same keys and your problem is fixed.

thats a good idea but the problem i have is i can not get the wheel off because the air bag is in the way. is there a trick to remove it and not have it blow up on me?

disconnect the battery and short out the cigarette lighter i believe. this will ensure that the bag will not deploy nor will you have a charge built up in the system capable of doing the same. as for disassembly, do a search on here as there was a post concerning this a little while back ago.
