Is this in a truck with a two piece driveshaft? YOu may have a center support bearing that is bad, or you could have a bad bearing in the transmission. Difficult to troubleshoot over a keyboard. Maybe a little more information.
DOnt be afraid to post a new thread so you can benifit from many ideas.
Try to be as specific as possible. Year, make, model, and equipment will be a plus.

2004 F350 6.0 crewcab srw. 8 inch lift 983 Kumho 365/22.5. Two piece drive shaft with bearing carrier. everything is tight when truck is on ground. I lifted the rear axle up off the grond and the u-joint is tight but the flange after the u-joint that connects to the pinion housing moves side to side when I push on it. pinion bearing or what ?????????????

you should have no movement side to side and only roughly 1/2 inch rotational play in the driveshaft which is normal ring and pinion backlash... side to side movement means your pinion bearings are shot....

Would that involve a complete break down of the ring and pinion assembly to replace the bearings???

Thanks.

It certainly would. I am not familiar with what rear end is in that vehicle. Some are easier than others if you want to do a patch job. If it were me, I'd just buy a bearing and seal kit and go through the whole thing if you are getting that deep into it.

Generally speaking when a pinion gets that loose the depth is thrown off on your pinion and sets up an adverse wear pattern on the ring and pinion. Replacing the bearings will eliminate the play but most likely you will end up with a howl from the gear set. I would do a complete overhaul including new ring and pinion.

Your probly have a sterling 10.5" I have rebuilt a many of those units, you will need a bearing puller set, a shop press, and a collection of carrier shims (possibly), and gear marking compound. If you haven`t done a rear end before however, i would probly recommend finding a buddy who has (just for precedure and setup) A good shop should be able to rerbuild one of those, and be in-and-out of the shop in a day.

Another thing I found common on these HD fords is finding that the u-joints seize regularily, showing no play and only half the time making noise before they fail (weird i know) so when your doing the rear end make sure you pull the shafts right out and feel the movment of the u-joints.

Thanks for all the feed back. Pulled cover this morning and found a boken tooth on the ring gear. I assuming that the loose pinion/companion flange was the cause. I do remember a clunk sound when backing up the other day but did not put 2 and 2 together. So its off to Heavey metal performance in Rockdale IL. Running 4.56 with 41's.
