I just got a call from the drivetrain shop, and the report is that the first mechanic did not set the preload correctly and it is moving in and out on the gear causing excessive wear. The other bearings are also showing damage from excessive heat. He is going to replace all bearings and the gear and pinion, and the cost will be $1250, with a 2-year/24,000 mile warranty. That's a much better price than the dealer was going to charge me ($2000 - $2200) with a 12 month/12,000 mile warranty. I'm really happy with Allen and his shop, but I know the real test will be how well my truck performs. He has 4 bays in his shop, and it was very clean. All work is done by him and one assistant. Although his specialty is working on jeeps and off-road trucks, he had two Ford trucks and a GMC waiting for service when I dropped off my truck. I'll report back in later when I get my truck back. ![]()

dont be fooled about not working on stuff like yours. off roaders know how to put rear gears together where they last. it does sound like a better deal with an insurance policy. really hope things go good your way and you have better luck with it. wouldnt advise going back to the first shop though. man probably doesnt own a torque wrench.

Of course, you helped me out. You gave me the name of your friend's shop in Houston, and I really appreciated it. I just decided to go with a shop that specialized in working on the rear ends and off-road vehicles. I've gone to other forums for help before, but half the time, they don't even answer. So, I'm sticking to this forum and sending all my friends here. I hope you guys get paid for this work, cuz you are awesome. ![]()

You are so right about the learning experience. I jump around and read a lot of posts including the discussion about the various oils on the market and which ones are preferred by each of you. I had not heard of DELCO either until you mentioned it Brad. Keep up the great work. Last edited by bradrhale; 07-08-2009 at 11:31 AM.

I got my truck back - I got my truck back - I got my truck back !!!!Woo Hoooo - It handles and sounds like a new truck. He completely rebuilt the differential, plus replaced the rear wheel bearings and seals. I also asked him if he would work on my brakes too because I was getting some steering sheel shimmy when I applied the brakes. Soooo, he had my rotors turned, replaced the brake pads, repacked the front wheel bearings and replaced the seals, too. I'm so happy I could do a dance. If anyone in Houston needs work on their differential, 249 Drivetrain is the place to go. And the guys on this forum deserve all the credit for bringing me up to speed on the differential. Armed with that information, I was able to discuss my problems with several shops and eliminate a couple because I knew more about the differential than they appeared to know. ![]()
