This a 335 series or windsor?
Really does not matter I guess. Have you removed the dizzy? It would appear that the distributor gear was damaged by either a bad oil pump or the shaft failed and a foreign object went between the cam / dizzy gear.
Perhaps the can walked that far? Any other damage? Have you pulled the cam?

Hard to say, just looking from the outside.

It looks like a sandhole in the cast. Why did you pull it down? it could be welded or drilled tapped and plugged. If it is not affecting anything it's fine, but you could plug it with jb-weld if it bothers you

Nope most it would do is let oil from the top go into the crankcase....if the oil is not milky then gas or other oil is suspect. what does it smell like?

It has gas in it. Ford pumps are known for a leaking diaghram and the leak allows fuel to enter the engine. Once the engine filled with fuel the oil thinned out and the already poor oiling system could not keep the bearings functional. Thats where the noise came from.
It is still possible that the thin oil caused the oil pump to fail, and the pump siezed up sending the shaft up into the dizzy and the dizzy is busted (at least the gear is) and busted the block.
While this could be a sand casting imperfetion, this will eventually crack, if it is not already, and turn into problems.
Taking the dizzy out if you can and removing the pan will tell you the rest of the story.
