Thumbs down 1998 Ford Ranger won't start in Park

As stated, the truck won't start while it's in Park - have to put it in neutral to start it.
Anybody else have this problem?

It started gradually a few weeks ago, it would also not fully engage sometimes when shifted into drive (this started before having to start it in neutral)
Does it sound like a linkage problem?
I haven't looked into it yet since I don't have time but will once I get some feedback.

Thanks,
Steve

could be a linkage problem, if it is out of adjustment range selector switch may not be reconizing it as being in park

The Nuetral Safety swith might be bad. the points inside could have finally just wore out in the park position.

I'd be inclined to suspect a linkage problem, due to the "not fully engage" issue. IIRC those trucks had nylon inserts at the pivot points on the linkage. Those inserts sometimes broke or wore out, leading to a lot of play in the linkage. Easy fix though, as the replacements snap right in.

So how should I go about fixing the inserts? Where can I find them?

Pop the hood and start looking at the linkage. Follow it down under the truck and look at every place there's a connection. Check each to see if it's loose. They should move easily, but not have any "slop" in the connections.

I can't see the linkage from under the hood or even from under the dash, what should I be looking for? A wire, a metal piece?

It won't shift into 1st gear, it won't start in park... only in nuetral. When I just started it just now, it wouldn't drive forward in D or 2nd gear. But it will drive in Reverse perfectly fine.

still need to find the linkage....
