Okay, I have no idea what your mechanical ability might be, so please don't get insulted by this question...

You loosened the hold down bolt, right?

When I was in auto shop in high school soooo many years ago; my lab partner and I tore down a 390 and when we put it back together we used a bolt through the timing chain cover that was too long and tightened against the dizzy so it wouldn't turn. I don't know if that is possible on a 302 block but its a thought.

Knock it a few times with a rubber mallet, and be sure the bolt holding it is out or loose.
