Wierd Engine noise

I have a 1995 Ford F-150 5.8L 4x4 with 222,000 miles on it. I can rev up the engine in park or nuetral and it sounds like it should. When i take it down the highway and press down on the pedal it makes this loud rattling noise that sounds like its coming from the engine. i can't figure this one out. Any Ideas?

From your description it could be bad rod bearings, however you would expect to hear them if reved from cold in Park.
If it`s more a rapid pinging sound it could be pre-ignition. A higher octane gas may cure that.
It could also be a cracked flex-plate or loose torque converter bolts or loose flex-plate to crank bolts. If some of these the starter may be noiser that before.
Just my opinion, hopefully someone else will have some ideas.

rattling sounds like exhaust problems such as a leak or possibly the inside of a cat coming apart.

I`d also say flexplate cracked.... put it in drive and attempt to do a brake stand, before you start your tires rolling see if you can hear the same noise... just an idea

I'm going to go against popular opinion here and say your timing is off and you're getting preignition. Any chance you skipped a link putting in that chain?

well when i got the truck it was running a little rough so i changed it thinking it had alot of miles on so i replaced everything chain and gear set, water pump, radiator hoses, belt, did a full tune-up.it didn't skip time but someone had recently changed it and screwed up when they installed it. If i would have known that mechanic i would have reamed him out. I wasn't able to fine tune the timing because i didn't know where to unplug the ECM so that i could manually adjust it. I can brake stand and it won't do it either. i guess it might just be preignition. does anyone know where to unplug the diod for the ecm so i can manually adjust it?
