| Fuel Pump Mayhem Hello to all, This is my first post so please excuse any discrepencies in my information or lack of protocal. My problem is my 92 Ford F-150 with a 5.0 that is not getting fuel. I went out to start it last night and it wouldnt. It turns over fine and sounded like it wanted to start so i shot ether into the throttle body and it would run on it but quickly die. I then noticed when i turned on the key in the ON position that the fuel pump didnt prime. It has duel tanks so i switched over to the other and coulndnt hear the fuel pump come on in it either. I went to the power distribution block in the engine bay and found there is (3) 20 Amp Maxi fuses that have to do with the fuel pumps. I checked those and they were not blown. I then went to the fuel pump relay in the same p/d/b and noticed there were several with the same Ford part numbers (1 being the horn relay) and swapped them out with no success. I also discovered there is an emergency fuel cutoff in the passenger side kickpanel.I checked/Reset it with no luck. Help! If anyone has ever expierenced this or knows a probably remedy please reply. I know it sounds like there is no current getting to the pumps but i am limited on my electrical abilities. I was told by a friend to get an ohm meter and check for current flow. I dont own one and would know what to do if i had two. Any help is appreciated. Thanks! Oh and by the way CPS is Clunker Program Survivor the bumper sticker i am going to have made once the blue oval is back up and running. Thanks, CPS |

| Well, you've done a good job of troubleshooting so far. You checked all the right things and I'll even give you bonus points for swapping the relays. Do you know if the fuel pump relay actually clicks on when the key is turned? With the hood open and standing outside the truck you should be able to hear it click when you turn the key to "on".

| Mayhem No More Hello to All, I am glad to report my Blue Oval is back on the road and earning its keep in the stable. I would like to thank BernieB for responding to my post and hope to help anyone who runs across the problem i had. The problem with the fuel pumps not coming on was the Tank Selector Switch in the dash going bad. I was told by a mechanic that usually you can see burn marks on the switch when you unplug it from the harness but that wasn't the case here it just quit working. I used a test light to check each componet to see if it was getting current and felt fairly confident before ordering the part that this was going to be my problem. To all that get frustrated with an electrictical issue my advice is be patient and keep it simple when diagnosing electrical issues. I am far from being an electrician and after 5-minutes of talking to one my head starting swimming with all the jargon they use. I had a lot of people telling me to get a volt meter and measure the current from different places and everything went over my head after that. i knew i could use a test light and thats all i needed. It was a $15 part that caused all my headaches, but when i fixed it myself and didn't have to pay a wrecker to tow it to a shop then pay to have it fixed i drove it with pride like a 16 year-old that just got their drivers license. Good luck to all with their problems and try to keep it simple. |
