Gas cap causing SES light to come on?

HI Everyone,

I have a 2002 F-150 4x4 with a 4.2L engine. I got gas the other day and shortly after i pulled out of the station my service engine soon light came on. Truck is still working fine, however i noticed that my gas cap is broke. The "stub" part of it that you insert in the hole, one side of it you can pull, so when you put it on it feels loose (like its not getting a tight seal). I've heard tell of faulty or loose gas caps causing the engine light to come on. DOes this sound like the culprit.?

mine's been on for the last 3 months, and suddenly, i must have lined up the cap just right, cuz lo and behold, it went out. checked the codes, and it always spits back a "fuel vent error." supposedly this can be corrected by replacing your factory cap with a vented one... anyone know any more about this?

Most likely this is the case as Leolkfrm stated but it couldn't hurt to take it to your local Auto Zone, kragen, or whatever they are called there, and have them scan it for ya for free

If it is the culprit may I suggest a locking gas cap if you don't already have one. Helps keep those petrol suckers away from your truck

I'm 100% sure that it's the gas cap. My brothers wife wouldn't close the gas cap all the way and the check engine light would turn on she even took it to the dealership and she still does the same think and calls my brother and says the light is on again well he ask her did you just put gas she says yes. You figure out the rest guys.
