new truck

im looking at buying a new truck, to haul my horse trailer around and would like some opions and views on the new supper dutys.

has there been any big problems with the new 6.4L motors or any big problems with the f350 4x4 dually's. im also considering an older truck 99 and newer with the 7.3L.
any info would be great

thnx Conrad

As with any new motor a few have had their share of problems. They had a radiator problem in the beginning and a few have had issues, but nothing seems to be as bad as the 6.0 problems that ford was plagued with..

IMO you cannot beat the fords. Power wise, comfort wise, and space wise. Straight from the dealer they have good power for towing and hauling. They don't have the best mileage, but with a few "upgrades" this can be improved (and from what I have read this is easier on the fords than the dodges. dodge tuners seem to be having problems with the new 6.7's...)

Interior is top notch with, and the ride quality in the new one's is far superior to any other 1 ton truck out there (IMO)

My biggest suggestion would be to go to different dealers and drive 2 or 3 of each brand and feel what is right for you.

I have to say that if I had the money I'd have a new 6.4. I had one as a work truck and put 10K miles on it before transfering locations and I didn't have a single issue out of it. loaded, unloaded, gooseneck etc.. it would take anything I threw at it. The only downside to it was the mileage... With the dpf on it just threw the mileage out the window. I was only getting around 15 mpg, but I know too many people to count that have 6.4's that have removed the dpf and used a tuner and are getting 18-21 mpg's

dpf = diesel particulate filter. All new trucks built since 08 have them, ford, chevy, and dodge. It is parts of this emissions crud that has ruined the mileage in diesels and forced us to change to ultra low sulfur diesel which in itself has also caused decreasing fuel mileage.

I may be chimming in here where I shouldn't since I have never owned a Ford Diesel vehicle. But driving a shuttle at the airport, with a fleet of 8 2002 with 6.0 and 2 2006's and all the problems we have with those Ford Corp diesels, I would just simply, RUN, don't walk, away from those Ford Corp Diesels and go with the Powerstroke 7.3. They are proven tough and very few problems. The others shuttle companies are running 7.3's and their stuff does not break down near as often. JMO, I would never own a Ford Corp Diesel after seeing the crud we do. Its not like we are working them hard or tearing them up and it seems of the 10 in the fleet, at least 2 are broke down all the time, and we have to bring out the old 96 gasoline shuttle for back up. As it is right, 2 shuttles are being reitred, 1 with 140,000 miles, the other with 165,000 miles. One of them even had a new motor put in it at about 87,000. I believe it was a warranty replacment engine.
