Engine Issues

When I do a consistant speed over 35 mph, my truck likes to shake, almost like its sputtering... It does it with or without a payload. I stay at a consistant speed and it sputters. I was at 55 mph with 1,000 lbs (overdrive off) and it happened.

Also,
My truck likes to just shut off when it feels like... Usually its when I am sitting at a traffic light. But sometimes it shuts off as I am making a turn or coming up to the stop light. It has never shut off at a speed over 20 mph.

I really need to get this truck tow ready, and I dont want this to become a bigger problem. PLEASE HELP!!!

Make sure you've got clean fuel use a water remover and make sure the turbo isn't loaded up or something. In my experience it sounds like water in the fuel and or the fuel was gelling up in the cold. But you're in Florida so you don't need to worry about that like we do up here in NY. Also, check for any codes, even if the engine light isn't on. Hopefully some more of the better experienced diesel guys can help, but that's about as much as I can tell you.

No codes came up. And when the engine light comes on, the truck shuts off. As soon as I re-cycle the key, the engine light is gone, and the truck starts right up with no problems..... IT IS DRIVING ME CRAZY.

Sounds like the CPS is on its way out to me... Every guy I know with a 7.3L carries a spare in his glove box (including myself before I got rid of my old F350)... Its one of the very few weak links on that engine.

What is the CPS? Is it a Dealer only part?

Cam Position Censor. A good way to test this is while your cranking the engine to start watch your tach. If you see no movement on the tach while cranking then swap out that CPS. Last time I picked one up they were available at most parts outlets but I would recommend you stick to the OEM ones. From what I've heard the aftermarket units don't last as long. OEM has two versions... the original Black one and the new Grey ones... Get a black one if you can (they are harder to find)... they last longer...

Also there is a metal crimp on the wiring from the Cam Position Sensor that could ground out on the engine occasionally and cause it to die... Another possible cause mostly seen on the older 7.3's. The newer one's found in the superduty's usually do this cause of the CPS itself though.

BTW Navistar International makes this engine for Ford and produces parts for it as well. You can actually pick up a CPS from any international dealer and usually at a MUCH cheaper price than what Ford will charge you. Lemme see if I can grab those P/N's for you, I know I got them here somewhere...

Got the P/N's for ya just in case.. this is the Ford P/N F7TZ-12K073-B goes for $20 at Dfuser and fits the 96.5-2003 7.3L engines. This is the newest Blue CPS which doesn't have any known issues based on what I've read.

The 99-03 Superduty CPS made by International has P/N is 1825899C93.

The pre 99 CPS (97 and before) made by international has P/N 1821720C99. Some users report this CPS actually made their post 99-03 7.3L run BETTER...

I've heard of charges around $300-600 for parts and labor to do a CPS at a Ford dealer... I hope they don't try to rake you.

I'd recommend you pick one up and keep it as a spare in your glove box as well. Consider yourself lucky yours is going out in this fashion. Most of the time they just go out on you while your cruising and thats it... your stranded... Plugging in another one will have you running right away and it only takes 10 minutes on the side of a road (Ask me how I know)...

Here's a GREAT walkthrough on how to do it incase you're curious... Guzzle has written many do it yourself articles which I myself have used on my own truck. He knows his stuff better than any Ford tech I have met.

Do they usually just fail, almost like a fuel pump??? Because mine hasnt left me stranded....yet... It just acts up really bad.

I will check out that website. Thank you very much.

I am assuming that you had the great experience of roadside truck repairs...
