89 Ranger tail light problems

i have an 89 ford ranger that i bought a few weeks ago. everything works except it was missing the lights that clip into the bumper and light up your license plate. i bought the new wiring assembly and new bulbs and found the old ones tucked in under the spare tire. since i already had the other ones i put them in anyway and now i cant get my tailights to go on. sometimes if i unhook the license plate lights and touch the green and brown wires on my trailer light plug in they come on but then my blinkers turn off the one side and then just light the one side up like a brake light any help greatly appreciated

True....was hard to tell if the lights were working now though the way I read the post. I know with my old car it was shorting but the lights still worked... sometimes... I hated that darn thing...
