General questions about 1982 F100/150... Hello, I was recently given a 1982 F100 or 150, with a straight 6 engine. I don't know if the truck is an F100 or an F150 though, because although it says F150 on the side of the truck, some of the paperwork, like title, etc., states F10. Not F100 but F10... Anyway, I was wondering what you might be able to tell me about this make and model of truck. It has 160,000 original miles. It's in pretty decent shape, runs good, needing just a little work done on it, like new throw out bearing and a new tail pipe, etc. I don't know anything about trucks and was hoping you would be so kind as to give your opinion on a few questions. 1. How much more life can I expect out of this engine. I mean, how many miles are they good for, generally speaking? 2. When it does finally need fixing, how difficult will it be for me to find parts? 3. I want to haul firewood with this truck, is there anything I can do to make it more heavy duty in it's hauling capacity, in terms of springs, etc? 4. If/When the engine is beyond routine/normal repair, what are my options in terms of rebuilding or putting a different engine in this truck. What other engines would fit in this truck. Nothing fancy. This will always be a work truck. Any other information you might have and be willing to pass along, I will greatly appreciate it. Thank you very much for your time and sharing your knowledge. Thank you, Jim -- from Cloverdale, IN

if it has the 300 slant six, that thing should last you forever. that was one of the only engines, in my opinion, that ford got right. an f10 is the same as a f100. that is just how the data plate and vin reads. finding parts will not be too much of a problem although they might tend to be a tad higher than other manufacturers.

Thanks for the info. I just went out and looked at the engine and I just don't know if it's a slant six or not. There does not seem to be an obvious 'slant' to any part of the engine, so I am assuming it is not a slant six. It's a 4.9L engine, I don't know if that can help identify it as a slant six or not. Input from any others is welcomed. Thanks, Jim

| I believe he meant to say straight 6 instead of slant 6. The slant 6 was a Mopar production.

i believe the chylser slant six was a 225. this engine i have seen run, with my own eyes, without water and oil. i have also seen them run with a hole in the block. ford also made another 6 cylinder but it was a 200 ci engine. you are not going to beat that 300 for reliability. easy to work on also. they are not a powerhouse but they will get you from point a to point b.
