Tire question.

I have a question about plugging radial tires.

I hope this is in the right thread.

I, personally, do not have radials plugged. PATCHED ONLY!!

The question I have is: Isn't there a law about the plugging of radial tires somewhere on the net? This is a big debate with my boss and myself. We had a company vehical that has taken 2 nails in the last 2 months. Both times he has had plugs installed. Now there is a third nail. Because the tread is so new, I have a feeling he is going to get a third.

I need ONLINE documentation regarding the use of plugs in radials.

I only use patches for the reason I heard a long time ago when using plugs you can mess up a cord and the tire will mess up fast.

either way, hitting three you are compromising the integrity of the tire. Perhaps you are looking at this wrong. You need to find the site with OSHA's laws about job site safty and give him a copy of appropriate waste disposal techniques... Then, if there is no nails on the ground to run over, this will be a null and void issue...LOL...

dont think there is one. but price wise, i would rather use the patch. screw a plug. have always been unreliable to me. these tractor trailer tires get patches and have NEVER had one fail.

I ask, as I thought once that I read there was a law passed here in MI that IF a plug was used, it had to be used in conjunction with a patch. (sounds wierd, but it MIGHT be true.)

Today, the owner has not only found the third nail in the company pickup, but also one in our cube van (10,000 GVW) in the front tire.

Dispite the constant complaints about plugs, he still gets them. And get this......I can get radial patches for FREE from a tire store 200 yards from our company, regardless if you buy the tire from there or not!!!! (and you wonder why I write this).

I, Personally, almost trashed my car when the plug I had blew out of the tire at freeway speed, years ago, before patches were used.

Therefore, MAYBE, if I could get the exact law, if it exists, and a little mouse delivers it to him some night, maybe he would learn something.

MOST Rigs, when they get patched, they use a plug/patch. Utilizing the best of both. Filling the void in the face of the tire with a plug, and the innerside of the wheel with a patch. If done right, then its a 100% seal.

I use to work for KalTire commercial division. Man oh man, I thought they were tryin to kill me. For those that dont know, a Semi truck tire can only be taken off by hand. There are no air or hydraulic tools to remove the tire from the wheel.

When I do my tires, I use a plug patch, I have 4 of them in one tire(driver front), and one plug in another(passenger front). The plug leaks all the time.
